ChLA Executive Committee Statement about Events in Charlottesville
In the face of increasingly bold statements and actions of racism, we write on behalf of the Children’s Literature Association’s Executive Committee to denounce the white supremacist terrorism, with its racism, anti-Semitism, hatred, and bigotry, evidenced in Charlottesville, Virginia on August 11 & 12, 2017. We condemn the violence that resulted in multiple injuries and deaths; we denounce white supremacy in all of its incarnations at any level of our society; and we declare our commitment to the promotion of diversity and equality as well as the preservation of civil rights and freedoms in the United States and globally. Childhood is a vital site of preparation for local, national, and global citizenship, and we support all endeavors that encourage children and all who surround them to understand and to champion universal human rights.
